We are opening a Writing Center starting this fall.

The goals of the center are as follows: Provide support for faculty and graduate student with research articles in English (mainly STEM fields), provide support for writing international grant applications, help with written curricula materials for GRIAT faculty (lectures, presentations, manuals, lab assignments), help with MSc thesis  of GRIAT students in the English language.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: hire, train, and supervise faculty from the Foreign Languages Department to work as Writing Center Tutors; meet regularly with tutors; develop Center policies; oversee short and long-term planning; conduct outreach to university faculty and the campus at large; develop and facilitate writing workshops; maintain pertinent records; and develop assessment tools for tracking the Center’s use and efficacy.

The director is expected to meet regularly with Head of the International Office and Head of Foreign languages department to discuss issues pertinent to the unique writing requirements of each goal of the Writing center. The training and supervision of faculty from the Foreign Languages Department can be done within the Institute of Professional Development (PD), so a specific PD course can be developed to train tutors.

Writing Centers are a novel concept within the Russian education system, so much work will be done from the bottom-up to build its infrastructure, mission, reputation, outreach and so forth.

Qualifications: Advanced degree with an emphasis in English as a Foreign Language, Second Language Writing  (preferred), Composition. Ph.D. or MA/ MSc preferred.

We would welcome early career scholars, postdocs or writing teachers who have at least some experience in any of the following areas: 

  • * Demonstrated experience in designing and teaching composition courses.
  • * Experience coordinating a writing center, including training and supervising of peer tutors.
  • * Experience in writing center evaluation and assessment. 
  • * Familiarity with use of technology in writing intensive classes.
  • * Professional activities relevant to writing center leadership and administration.
  • * Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize tasks/projects.
  • * Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students.

The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is an academic year non-tenure track position, renewable annually. The appointment is expected to begin September 15, 2017.
